100m Hurdles Training & Technique

Attack Angle & Lead Leg

Drive the lead leg aggressively toward the hurdle with a flat foot position at clearance. The attack angle determines clearance efficiency — elite hurdlers spend minimal time in the air.

Trail Leg Mechanics

The trail leg should snap through horizontally at hip height after clearance. A poor trail leg rotation adds time and disrupts sprint mechanics between hurdles.

Start to First Hurdle

Elite hurdlers reach the first hurdle in 7 or 8 strides from blocks. Establishing the correct stride count early sets the rhythm for the entire race.

3-Stride Rhythm

Maintaining a consistent 3-stride pattern between all 10 hurdles is the foundation of fast hurdling. Any variation disrupts timing and adds distance to each clearance.

Speed Endurance

The final three hurdles separate championship-caliber athletes. Build speed endurance through 150m–200m hurdle repeats to maintain form when fatigued.

Sprint Foundation

The 100m hurdles is a sprint event first. A strong 100m flat base (sub-11.50 for D1 contenders) is essential — technique layered on top of raw speed produces elite times.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time do I need for a D1 hurdles scholarship?

Running consistently under 13.00 puts you in solid scholarship consideration at D1 programs. Top-tier SEC and Pac-12 programs may look for sub-12.85 for full scholarship offers, while mid-major D1 programs actively recruit at 13.20–13.50.

Do 60m hurdles times count toward D1 outdoor standards?

No. The indoor 60m hurdles and outdoor 100m hurdles are separate events with separate qualifying standards. However, strong indoor performances signal outdoor potential to coaches.

What hurdle height does the NCAA use?

College women run 0.838m (33") hurdles, the same height used at the Olympic level. High school girls in most states use the same height, though some use 0.762m (30") for freshmen/JV competition.

Is wind reading required for qualifying marks?

Yes. Wind assistance greater than +2.0 m/s makes a performance wind-aided and ineligible for automatic or provisional qualifying. The NCAA requires official wind readings for all sprint and hurdle events.
