Masters 400m athletes often find that a more even-paced race strategy — rather than going out hard and dying — becomes more effective with age. The first 200m should feel controlled; the second 200m should be where your lactate tolerance takes over.
The 400m demands sustained near-max glycolytic effort. Masters athletes should include 200m–300m reps at 90–95% effort with longer recovery (5–8 min) to train the lactate system without excessive fatigue accumulation.
Lower body power is essential for the 400m. Squats, deadlifts, and sled pushes maintain the force production needed for the first 200m. Maintain a strength session year-round, even in competitive season.
